What I think is also really important to mention is that we never actually get to leave the room, like Ruby. I think that had tom not killed her attacker he wouldve brought her to the hospital to get proper treatment, the only reason he didnt(imo) is because he feared the legal repercussion. I can't figure out where that scene fits into the timeline. I think that if this is the case, it points brilliantly to the larger theme of the movie, the cognitive dissonances that decieve the brain.
