But I didn't expect that the grip on A7C to be so shallow, so it's noticeably less comfortable even with the average size lenses"The EVF gets panned even more by people who have used the camera. I also chose the a6000 for the small form factor as well- but once I started shooting seriously, size was not a big issue, and rather it was usability and access to better lenses, and then I went to full frame a-mount and the plethora of used zeiss glass, size be damned. A7iii is quite old and slower camera. If the a7c did not exist, then I would understand why Sony discounted the a7iii. As for the possibility of including a bigger EVF, look at slide 6 above. Why can't we get it right, and everyone everywhere finally be happy? Hamish Gill of 35MMC compares and contrasts the user experience of two medium format titans: the Mamiya 7 and the Plaubel Makina 67. It could still be compact and forgo the similarities with the A6000 that undermine its user experience. Unlikely a7III will get the firmware update. You also need space for the battery, the EVF, the LCD, and some decent controls. The popularity of the A6xxx series is easily explained. Fujifilm took their GFX50S which had a large grip and a "prism" bump, and produced the GXF50R which is a smaller rangefinder-style version, but managed to still fit a .77x EVF (compared to .85x on GFX50S). I have a7c it is definitely not a step back sorry. Yes. This way they can release the Mark II later with the issues fixed and people will re buy it again. The 7DII feels very nice in the hand - much better than the Sony, and will impress more people, but the Sony actually has better IQ and better AF. In terms of making the rear screen smaller and the EVF larger, it may not so much be the screen that's in the way, but the sensor assembly, in which case, cannae do, Sir - or you'd have to have the EVF poking out a lot further towards the back, which may defeat the whole point of the camera. I also use my phone for selfies. Close. A7III and A7c. We were not asked to write anything about these cameras, nor were we provided with any sort of compensation. The A7III is bigger yes but may be more comfortable to grip (especially if you use bigger lenses), it also has 2 SD card slots for redundancy (extremely important for working professionals) as well as more controls. @Richard It's rather obvious, but this article probably should've mentioned you're looking at a FAS display vs a tilt display as well, that can be pretty divisive for many and would be reason enough to dismiss one or the other from the get go for some. I tend to shoot in aperture-priority, and I just use the aperture ring and the exposure comp dial. Coming from m43, this camera is a home run (except that it costs twice as much as a good m43 camera). Personally, I do think it's a significant difference in size and weight (as compared to my A9). What does it suggest? I don't remember reading those in A7III review. The Sony a7C packs a full-frame sensor and an impressive list of features into a very compact body. High resolution, weather-sealed bodies and wide dynamic range are all important. IT is more than sufficient for framing the way it is. I'm hopeless without it. It's done all the time by all companies and is necessary to pay for the R&D. Many of the comments here seem like someone trying to convince others. @nikonissuperb: you prove another point: for those using an a6xxx model and wanting to move to FF, most would have no problem jumping to one of Sony's FF FE mount cameras. So there are more than enough improvements over A7iii.... Kiril wrote: The whole camera industry is now a niche compared to what it used to be 8 years go.". Almost zero likelihood. to improve AF on the Sony A7 series would be great! //the A7C is almost as bulky and weighty as the A7III//. I thank Sony for their innovativeness and guts. The A7 III boasts a 24 megapixel sensor - but so do the A7 and A7II . So har its my most used lens. a7c seems perfect for people who don't use a viewfinder at all. Picked up the camera two weeks ago. That is all. With an improved design, enhanced color science, and better overall image quality, Sony’s continues to ride the mirrorless high horse with the latest iterations of their ubiquitous Alpha line of full-frame cameras. Sony should give more information on whether it was challenging to remove that faux prism and have a (faux too...) rangefinder style viewfinder. I am. A7C splits video from photo settings. But nothing from their marketing seems to suggest a niche type of camera. I would tag A7C with C for creative. potentially a job for Roger Cicala to find out? I would say it's pretty clear the EVF was, if not an afterthought, at least not a great priority. It's not a matter of the microprocessor and circuit board size, but the size of the sensor. Definetely! Read our review to find out. And the camera is great for 4k video. All Sony FFs up to now, along with those from Canon, Nikon and Panasonic, have been "DSLR-style" - a move obviously intended to help people switching from DSLRs to feel more at home. No Sony camera had it by the time I sold them, aside from my beloved A99. But what is outdated tech, or just plain disappointing, is the EVF, the LCD screen, the old menu system, and one card slot. OK, it might slip more easily in and out of a backpack, but that's about it. But I think when Sony releases a new FF MILC at this type of price, they are going for more than a specific niche...I think they aimed this camera to be more for a larger general market. Thoughts R Us Granted, DSLRs can do a lot; too much for one device it could be argued. In NJ where I can drive my car, I have a trunk full of lenses and gear. there is a lot of LCD screen ocupying the back of the camera....and lots of requests for various control points/buttons/wheels etc competing for that real estate....where would you put it? There is no large prism in there, why the faux pentaprism angular lines? Buying camera kit by the pound isn't actually a bad idea. But that Sony... You got me! IMO this A7C is a flawed camera. Not very smart people taking selfies tend to fall off cliffs. But what's it like to use, and how does it stack up against Sony's own a7 III? Since it uses a compact design philosophy, compromises are expected for screen size and especially the EVF. The issue is blown way out of proportion. I see that some aspects of camera humor haven't developed past the film era.. 3. I, too, would love a smaller form factor, but I figured seeing the sizes of some of the lenses, would it really matter in the end? So called 'full frame' is the same old and tiny 24x36 capture area now housed in a large, heavy body. Sony's rangefinder-style milcs are not popular on here, but are hugely popular in the real world. So buy whichever one gets the A7sIII's menus first, or a R6, Z6, Z6 II (or S5 if you don't need tracking AF) if it doesn't?The C was perhaps a better viewfinder and better menu system away from a big win... Sony's a7C is among the smallest full-frame mirrorless cameras you can buy, and in terms of core capability, not much has been sacrificed for the sake of compactness. If you look at the EVFs of the two cameras you can see a big difference. On the bright side, I view A7C as a camera with Sony RX1R ii full frame compact philosophy, A6600 ergonomics, A9 autofocus, A7III image quality. This camera is aimed at A6xxx users, who have the same 2.36M dot EVF. Sure some companies maybe add more heft than necessary to some models, but overall there are reasons for the sizes available. If you've got to have a shutter speed dial, then you've basically limited yourself to Fuji. You don't need articulating LCD to take selfies. I'd even consider a A6600 over it, somehow (cheaper, smaller, and better feel in hands). @Handsome90: clearly when I said "no one is interested in this camera" I was using an expression...not literally meaning zero people are interested, as clearly some will buy this camera and some will like it.
