Hotel Katajanokka Helsinki: Transforming an old prison

Situation

An old prison building dating back to 1837 needed to be transformed into an inviting, comfortable space where those who left, would hope to be back soon! The owners of this novel, boutique hotel wanted to attract both business and leisure guests by creating a space filled with modern luxury. And, as always, we needed to achieve uncompromised comfort.

Outcome

In 2006, LWA redesigned each of the old prison’s cells into 102 hotel guest rooms and suites. We created peaceful havens away from the hustle and bustle of the city outside. The rooms were furnished with a Nordic minimal design befitting its Helsinki location and our own Swedish roots. The interior design was chic and luxurious and made the most of the buildings unique footprint. Thoughtful planning and furniture choices allowed us to create comfortable seating areas within limited public space.

Today we are back at the Hotel Katajanokka as we work on the new guest rooms and lobby refurbishment, all designed by LWA.
